A barber is just like your significant other. You have to build a relationship and stick to one good person. I've been going to Conrad's for years and wes is the only one I would trust to handle my cut. Alot of negative reviews of other barbers I've been reading but you cant blame the barber for the business. Do yourself a favour if your a first timer and ask for wes

Hi guys this is Amylya here I’m a barber at Conrads.

Occasionally we read the reviews and discuss among ourselves to see if there’s anything we can do to better our customer’s experience. For transparency we haven’t replied directly or asked persons to delete their comments for a freebie unlike some other shops. I would however like to address some of the concerns expressed here, maybe this can help with your decision making.

At this location on Lawrence Ave we are a group of 10. There are 9 barbers (Blade, Blacks, Socrates, Biggs, West, Prince, Mulligan, Junior and myself Amylya) with one hairstylist Joan.
We’re of Caribbean and African backgrounds. Occasionally you will hear various dialects, patois or creole but yes we do speak and understand English very well so to say we don’t... maybe you’re in the wrong Canada. At anytime there could also be topics of discussion anything from sports to nutrition to yes Bob Marley and Michael Jackson, shocker it’s a barbershop! If you’re in a rush you could indicate to the barber that you’re in a rush, if it’s me cutting your hair I will however inform you that for $30 I don’t do rush work.
Our skill sets vary by individual but we pride ourselves in being able to cut all types of hair, not only black and all are welcome here. If it’s your very first time and you don’t know any of the barbers or weren’t recommended to anyone, give yourself some time to sit for a few minutes to observe the haircuts taking place. My look is important to me, that’s what I’d do before jumping in someone’s chair at any barbershop in Toronto.
If you are unsure of how to describe what you’re looking for then pull out a picture, we have wifi. Often times customers say they want a number 2 or 1.5 and they don’t really know what those numbers mean, or they’ll say something like take an inch off the top and then when an inch comes off they panic that you’ve cut too much and the haircut is not what they intended. Some persons will also say nothing during the entire haircut and wait until the very end when the cape comes off to ask for changes. I can tell you quite frankly that although we aim to please, nobody has the time to cut one persons hair twice especially on a busy day. I read a review where the client said that they’d been facing away from the mirror during the cut, this could be true to an extent and it has a lot to do with the standing position that is most comfortable for the barber in terms of the electric plugs on the walls, the mat underneath our feet or the reflective lighting both inside the shop and outside through the glass. All these things you may not understand if you are not a barber but we will turn you towards the mirror occasionally rather than walk around the chair. If you find that you haven’t seen yourself at all, YOU CAN ASK! Hey bro can you show me the back for a second? Etc
It is a cash only business, therefore you must walk with cash and we only take walk-ins on a first come first serve basis except for Joan who works by appointment. This could seem rather outdated in this day and age but there is a reason for everything, we prefer to work independently hence there is no register for debit/credit. It’s also extremely difficult for each of us to control appointments, in the past we’ve all had persons who just didn’t show up without a call or message.
For the past 8 years I’ve been at Conrads this barbershop has been open every single day except for Christmas and New Years.
If you call and we inform you that we’re closing at 7:00pm that day, there is no point in you showing up at 6:55pm or even 6:30pm expecting that you will receive a haircut. Most likely the barbers already have others who are waiting. They also have a family and other things to attend to. My suggestion is that you arrive early or come on another day that is more suitable.
Communication with your barber is also key! Ask for their personal number to keep in touch.
