In June 1823, the town of York (now Toronto) called for proposals for a well to be dug in the market square. In six weeks, it was done. Workers dug through topsoil and then eight feet of rock before they found fresh water. They lined the chamber with bricks and installed a mechanical pump.
The well was in use for decades but was capped and is now somewhere underneath the north St. Lawrence Market building. This marker commemorates the well.
