After many failed attempts at purchasing chanter reeds online ( I am fairly new at this and have wasted time and money guessing what strength I should order! ) or buying reeds from vendors at competitions, I decided to do the 120km drive to London Ontario to buy a reed at Scott's where I assumed I would have better luck. It was the best decision I could have made! What I expected was to be shown a few reeds and come home with one I thought might work. What I got was personal, professional and very informative help! Jim presented me with a few packages of reeds and a chanter. He told me to go ahead and see if any of them were within my playing ability. After 8 or 9 difficult reeds, I found one that was very close to being perfect. Jim took the reed and blew it through a meter to verify the pressure number and wrote it down. He then proceeded to go through a few more to find another with the same reading. Jim gave me some very useful tips on how to manipulate them, break them in and store them. I bought drone valves for my friend and Jim demonstrated how to test the flappers and made sure I understood their function so I could relay the details to her as well. He is a wealth of knowledge and only to happy to share it with his customers. I highly recommend Scott's Highland Services. All of the staff at Scott's are delightful people. I will be back for sure!
I bought my first set of (pre-owned) bagpipes back in 1998 from Jim at Scott's, and they had served me well for 20 years!
I'm not the best for bagpipe maintenance, and an overhaul was LONG overdue. I found myself in London on business, so I decided to stop in. I finally met Jim 20 years later, and was able to tour his MASSIVE warehouse of all things Scottish/bagpipe related.
He tied-in a new bag, custom made a bag cover, re-hemped all fittings, oiled the wood and everything!
Looking and sounding great!
Excellent quality, fast delivery service. Great help on the phone as well, highly recommended!!!!
