We’ve always been well treated and given “first on first off” privileges if we arrive in time and it’s possible.
The staff has always been courteous and accommodating as well as personable. -

(August 24, 2021, 12:35 pm)Had a fantastic experience taking the ferry from Nova Scotia to PEI. It was my first time and the entire process was seamless. The staff were all helpful and easy going, the ferry itself was clean and spacious. The trip was smooth and way faster than I expected. Had a great time, and would 100% take the ferry to PEI again!

$82 for a standard car load irrespective of number of passengers. $21 for walk on adults.
You only pay to leave the island whether by bridge or ferry. Free to enter. Reservations are $82 up front and can be converted to a round trip for free.
Wasn't terribly busy both ways but due to COVID aftershock, Not a lot of facilities open on board, only the basic cafeteria.
Could bring the dog along but would have to take the pets up into the upper outside decks or leave in the vehicle.
