Cape Race Lighthouse

Awesome place. Hopefully you will get to meet one of the awesome lightkeepers. I got to meet Cliff and he is one awesome guy.

With the road improvements it's so easy to visit. Worth the effort.

Very interesting. The light floats on a bed of mercury and must be constantly maintained by two resident keepers. If you are there alone and meet Cliff, give him the puppy eyes and say you heard he's a great photographer.

The historical significance of this lighthouse is huge. I recall the Heritage Canada commercials reenacting the Marconi station and the importance of the lighthouse at Cape Race. Newfoundland is certainly a place of fishermen, lighthouses and the ocean. It’s particularly charming and this place is not different. They do have a feature exhibit about the Titanic transition and the various other historical importance relating to this point in the North Atlantic!

If you are a history buff or just want to gain some appreciation for scale and perspective about how far we’ve come in terms of communicating with one another, this is a must stop. Even if you are neither of those, they do a good job of the exhibit relevant to our country’s history.
