(March 29, 2022, 8:11 pm)On 29-Mar-2022 they had lots of free mulch. When you arrive at the entry scale, tell them you want to pick up some mulch, they will direct you and tell you to exit by the gate on the far right. At the mulch area there is an attendant who will direct you to the pile you can load up from. Bring a pitch fork to dig it out with.

(April 28, 2020, 11:39 pm)I went to the East Calgary landfill to get some free mulch.
Time. Great. I went at about 1300H on a Monday and there was a small line up. It took approximately 20 minutes for me to enter the landfill. Not too bad at all.
Recommendation: Do not drink a lot of water or coffee before going to the landfill. Because of Covid, the port-a-potties were closed.
Service. Good. The lady at the main gatepost was very helpful. She informed me where to go and which lane to use when I exit the facility. Since I was only collecting free mulch I could use the Bypass Lane (extreme right lane when exiting the facility).
Good. The staff at the mulch/wood chipping/compost area was helpful.
Things to bring when collecting free mulch.
Must have:
1) Shovel. I used a small snow shovel because I didn't have a proper shovel. The facility does not provide shovels. I saw other people just using their hands as well.
2) Container. I used Home Depot yard bags and filled them 3/4. They were convenient and easy enough to lift to the back of my Subaru CrossTrek.
3) Gloves.
Nice to have:
1) Mask. The wind picked up at times and dust and wood chips were flying all over.
2) Carpenter tape. To tape my bags once they were filled. I was afraid I would drop them and the contents would spill over.
I filled 6 yard bags, 3/4 filled, which was just right for what I needed.
